German Leather Museum, Offenbach am Main

By several former renovations in the past, the German Leather Museum became confusing and dissonant. It urgently needed a contemporary image. Apart from the orthogonal, supporting pillars there was no clear line. For this reason, the museum received an explicit zoning into different areas to facilitate the flow of movement and separate different uses. The public area on the ground floor as well as the main area of the first floor was completely reorganized in our proposal.

The centre of the museum is the new cafeteria with seating-accommodation. At that position the ceiling height was low and depressing, therefore the slab was removed to achieve a double-height gallery situation and create a spacious museum atmosphere.

All exhibition rooms were equipped with new showcase-cabinets, which are designed on the idea of a cell-structure, since the cell is the basic element of organic material such as leather. The exhibits are positioned and highlighted in the protrusions and recesses.
